LinkedIn Job Posting: A Complete Guide for Hiring Teams

Illustration of a person in a green shirt looking through binoculars. The lenses of the binoculars display the word 'JOBS' in both eyepieces, symbolizing a job search. The background is a textured red-orange color.

LinkedIn…you know it, you love it, you’ve probably posted dozens of jobs on it. With over 1 billion members, LinkedIn casts one of the widest nets around. But candidates complain that the platform is flooded with scammy job posts and half-hearted recruiters.

Recruiting on LinkedIn isn’t just about who has the flashiest job postings. It’s about using your budget wisely and making sure no good resume gets left behind.

Even if you don’t already have a huge presence on LinkedIn, posting a job is simple and cost-effective. Just follow these steps:

  • Go to the Jobs icon
  • Click Post a free job
  • Fill in job title, company name, location, etc.
  • Add a job description and list required skills
  • Choose how you'd like to receive applications
  • Create your screening questions
  • Preview your post

How much does it cost to post a job on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn offers 1 free job listing at a time for a period of 21 days, or until you reach 50 applicants. After that, the job posting will remain active, but potential candidates will no longer be able to see it in their search results. However, the job listing can still be viewed via direct link and on the jobs tab of your company page.

LinkedIn also offers pay-per-click pricing for job ads via its promoted jobs feature. For example, if you run a one-month campaign with a budget of $15 per day or $450 per month, your daily budget will automatically be adjusted based on the clicks you attract each day. You can stop the campaign at any time and once the budget is reached, LinkedIn will automatically pause the campaign to help make sure you don’t overspend.

*Note: Staffing and recruiting companies are now required to use promoted job posts or Job Slots on LinkedIn. Learn more about posting as a staffing or search company.

Free vs. promoted job posts: what’s the best way to post a job on LinkedIn?

While free posts are often better for individual hires, recruiters seeking to fill a high volume of roles will need to rely on promoted posts to get around the limit of 1 active post per user.

Not sure if paid posts are worth the spend? Consider the size of your budget, the urgency of your hiring needs, and the popularity of the role in question. Here are some of the key factors to think about:

Feature
Free Job Post
Promoted Job
Visibility Appears in search results Appears in search results + top of search with "Promoted" tag
Reach Shown to connections and searchers Shown to connections + targeted candidates via recommendations, email, feed, and mobile alerts
Post Limit 1 active post for 21 days (or up to 50 applicants) No limit on active posts

▶️Here’s a quick flow chart to help you decide:

→ Do you need more than 1 hire every 21 days?
✓ Yes → Choose Promoted Job Post
✗ No, I’m hiring intermittently → Choose Free Job Post

→ Is the role easy to fill or very niche/competitive?
✓ Easy to fill (entry-level, popular location, lots of candidates) → Choose Free Job Post
✗ Hard to fill (specialized skills, senior position, high competition) → Choose Promoted Job Post

→ Do you need to hire quickly?
✓ Yes, speed is key → Choose Promoted Job Post
✗ No, I can wait for applicants to trickle in → Free Job Post

→ Do you want your job seen by passive candidates (not actively searching)?
✓ Yes → Choose Promoted Job Post
✗ No, active job seekers only is fine → Free Job Post

→ Is visibility in the LinkedIn feed, email alerts, and mobile notifications important to you?
✓ Yes, I want more exposure → Choose Promoted Job Post
✗ No, I’m okay with standard visibility → Free Job Post

The dos and don’ts of LinkedIn job posting

LinkedIn plays by different rules, incentivizing strong branding on both the applicant and employer side. Use these tips to make your post stand out:

✅ Do:

  • Optimize your jobs page and company profile
  • Use straightforward job titles (aim for 0–40 characters)
  • Include clear requirements, responsibilities, and location in your job descriptions
  • Use balanced, inclusive language
  • Ask team members to share the job posting to their newsfeeds

❌ Don’t:

  • Bury your benefits – highlight pay, remote work options, etc.
  • Forget to include compensation
  • Rely on job postings alone – actively engage with candidates

If you’re determined to get more applicants on LinkedIn, consider using an applicant tracking system (ATS) that does the heavy lifting for you.
